House Passes Bill to Sell TikTok

Overdue Sale to Prevent Total U.S. Ban

Tiktok's Time Nearly Up

04202024 9:35 PM EDT The House of Representatives passed a bill on Saturday that could force the sale of TikTok within a year or face a ban from operating in the United States. The bill, which passed by a 336-71 vote, is now headed to the Senate for consideration.

"This is a serious national security threat, and we need to act now to protect our country," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). "This bill will give the president the authority to force the sale of TikTok if it is not sold to a U.S. company within six months."

TikTok, which is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, has come under fire from the Trump administration over concerns that it could be used by the Chinese government to spy on Americans. The Trump administration has threatened to ban TikTok from the United States if it is not sold to a U.S. company.

The bill passed by the House would give the president the authority to force the sale of TikTok if it is not sold to a U.S. company within six months. The bill would also prohibit TikTok from operating in the United States if it is not sold within a year.

The bill is likely to face opposition in the Senate, where Republicans have expressed concerns about the constitutionality of the bill. However, the bill could still pass if it is supported by a majority of Democrats and a handful of Republicans.
