India, Sri Lanka Ferry Charges to Increase by 20%

New fees will take effect in April

The ferry charges between India and Sri Lanka are set to increase by 20% from April 1, 2023. The decision was taken by the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) in a bid to recover the rising operational costs.

The new charges will be as follows:

  • Passenger fare: INR 2,500 (USD 32) per person
  • Vehicle fare: INR 5,000 (USD 64) per vehicle
  • Cargo fare: INR 10,000 (USD 128) per ton

The ferry service between India and Sri Lanka is a vital link between the two countries. It is used by both tourists and businesses to transport goods and people. The increase in ferry charges is likely to have a significant impact on the cost of travel and trade between the two countries.

The SCI and the SLPA have said that the increase in charges is necessary to cover the rising costs of fuel, maintenance, and other operational expenses. They have also said that the new charges are still competitive with other modes of transport between India and Sri Lanka.

The increase in ferry charges is likely to be met with some resistance from passengers and businesses. However, the SCI and the SLPA have said that they are confident that the new charges will be accepted by the majority of users.

The ferry service between India and Sri Lanka is a valuable asset to both countries. It is hoped that the increase in ferry charges will not have a significant impact on the number of passengers and businesses using the service.
