Severe Thunderstorms Threaten Damaging Winds to Eastern Nebraska

Introduction

Damaging winds, large hail, frequent lightning, and heavy rain are the primary threats with these storms. Remain weather aware Tuesday afternoon and evening and be ready to take shelter if threatening weather approaches.

Discussion

A squall line of severe thunderstorms will move into the eastern Panhandle of Nebraska Tuesday afternoon. The greatest threat with these storms will be damaging winds up to 75 mph, but there is also a risk of 1" hail and heavy rain which could lead to localized flooding.

The storms will enter the Panhandle near Valentine around 5 pm, and they will continue to move east. They are expected to reach Norfolk by 8 pm and should be exiting the state by 11 pm.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed the eastern Panhandle of Nebraska under a "moderate risk" for severe weather, which is a 4 out of 5 on their scale.

Safety Precautions

The National Weather Service is urging residents in the threatened area to be prepared to take shelter if severe weather approaches. If a tornado warning is issued, seek shelter immediately in a basement or interior room on the lowest floor of your home.

If you are caught outside, try to find a sturdy shelter like a building or a car. If you cannot find shelter, lie down in a ditch and cover your head with your hands.

Do not attempt to drive through flooded areas. Even a few inches of water can cause your car to stall.

Updates

The National Weather Service will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary. You can find the latest forecasts and warnings at the NWS website: https://www.weather.gov.
